The plot of the film revolves around detective Ally Foster, who goes back to her hometown to take days off from a recent case and finds herself in the middle of a murder spree. When investigated, the web just gets deeper and darker, leading her to realize the killer's motives are far more complicated than what can be seen on the surface.

Although multiple parallels exist between the film and some specific true crime incidents, most of these can be labeled as inspirations and general themes rather than direct adaptations.

Which true crime story inspired The Bear Lake Murders?

If you're a fan of true crime stories, you might be well aware of the Yosemite Killer. In 2002, Cary Anthony Stayner was convicted of killing four women- three of which were tourists as he worked at the Cedar Lodge motel. This bears a close resemblance to The Bear Lake Murders' plot surrounding the killer choosing tourists as their victims.

A similar parallel exists between the film's killer and Ivan Milat, also known as the Backpacker murderer who targeted backpackers across Hume Highway, where he would offer them help and then drive them away to a forest where he would kill them.

However, it's worth mentioning that a big difference between the true crime stories and the film's plot is that Stayner and Milat's motive behind killing the tourists is not known. As for the film, the killer chooses to attack their victims because of how the tourists are overcrowding Bear Lake and flooding it with less than welcomed visitors.

Another big difference is that the Bear Lake Murders happened at the same time every year, while Stayner and Milat only operated for less than a year and followed no such pattern.
